Matrescence, or the life-changing transition into motherhood, is a term coined in the 1970s by medical anthropologist, Dana Raphael, that has recently been reintroduced into the motherhood vernacular. NPR’s Lifekit episode, There's A Name For The Ups And Downs Of New Motherhood: It's Called Matrescence, I wanted to show a woman’s journey from pre-motherhood, pregnancy, early postpartum and then the 4th/5th trimester that reflected the vast physical and emotional changes felt by mothers.
