Xerox card for ICON 5

I was asked to illustrate a playing card for Xerox for the illustration conference, ICON 5. Each suit was given to a different New York City art school to illustrate. Parsons was assigned the hearts, and I picked the Queen. I really enjoyed this project because there weren't many limitations, which let my mind wander in various directions. These were my sketches:

The main hurdle with this assignment was to make an image that would create an interesting, as well as dynamic, image when it was doubled and flipped for the reverse side. I liked the Aztec one, but the AD pushed me to make the female bigger (which I agreed with), take out the ziggurat, and make the circle design smaller.

Took the Aztec Queen to a more refined sketch:

And here is the final:

Oldies always put me in a good mood. I remember my mom singing this song to me, "The Birds and the Bees" by Jewel Akens, way before I even knew what the birds and the bees were.

Senior Show

Thank you, thank you to all those who came to my Senior show opening this Wednesday. If you are seeing my blog for the first time, thanks for visiting! It was really great to see my classmates' work all up in one location. It was kinda surreal to have the day come and go so quickly. That day was the event I had been envisioning since I decided on Illustration as a major. Oh Joy!

My friends and I get a well deserved drink post-reception.

the week my family came to visit. part one.

This week has been everything I have been looking forward to during the last 4 years. My family is coming to ny twice, once for my show and then again for graduation the following week.

We started out with a trip to brooklyn brewery. fun times.

But before that, we went to max brenner for lunch.

and i was given these nasty lookin' pickles. people who know me, know that i hate pickles, never had them, never will.

Even the bus boy asked if Ed was Max's bald cousin.

then we went to see the statue of liberty up close and personal.

then ellis island museum

i had to include some cleveland love.

The two pictures above is the registry room, where all the immigrants would wait in line, have their examinations, basically pass the time. The one on top is the one today, and the picture below is what it used to look like. The museum was definitely a learning experience, and provided a lot of inspiration. They had really interesting old typefaces on pamphlets, they showed the clothing they brought in massive trunks, and they had beautiful bibles and torahs. I would recommend it highly.

i'll post more on flickr in a few days...

Some News...

I got my postcards on Thursday, which is a relief. It took a mighty long time for them to arrive to me. I am pretty happy with them. I have been making labels to send out to art directors. This will be my second mailer. Does anyone want me to send them a postcard? Just email me lindseybalbierz@gmail.com.

When I went out today I noticed that all the tulips are in bloom at City Hall Park. They are so beautiful. I wanted to take a few pictures because last year when they bloomed, they had all died within a few says. So sad.

I sewed a whale. It's red.

The issue of Current came out this week with my illustration, along with my classmates' work. It is teeny tiny. But that's okay. It looks good. They spelled my name wrong, and it wasn't my last name they spelled wrong which is what normally happens. It was my first name. Geeze.

Super Cool Toys

I swear, I must have the best family ever. Ever.

I was talking to my mom about this project that I am doing and wanted to put illustrations on building block toys, like the ones we all play with as kids. Well, my mom got thinking and realized that we probably still had them in our house somewhere. And what do you know it, Ed goes up into the storage roof of our garage and finds our old block toys. Ed got them down, my mom packaged them, and here they are today!! I am so pumped about them. It brings me back to when I would play on our scratchy raspberry-colored carpet zooming cars around.

I got so excited, I made a little narrative.

"It was a normal day waiting for the bus.

A dog and a high heel are standing passing the time.

Ms. High Heel notices Mr. Dog.

Mr. Dog notices Ms. High Heel.

So she walks over. Says hello.

And they wait for the bus together. "

The End.

Wanting to Sew

Latest on purlbee.com this wonderful quilted blanket. I love it.

It is by Molly, I am not sure of her last name to give her credit, but check out Molly's Sketchbook on the site for more projects by her. I really have been wanting to embroider and quilt my illustrations lately. I think my quilting genes are kicking in now. My mom was quilting when she was pregnant with me so, I think I am naturally inclined to do so. Plus my Aunt Donna makes some gorgeous quilts. In the mean time, I have been mulling over ideas for after graduation projects.

Happy Thursday!

drawing moustaches

I am making a book about moustaches that will be printed from lulu.com. I drew portraits of different dudes with moustaches (or beards). To put a twist on it, I am going to be making up the names that the guys call their moustaches. This naming part won't come until I get the book back from lulu. Then, when I get it back, I am going to die-cut the names into the pages. Yes, untraditional, but also unexpected. I will show more pics once I get the book printed.

new stuff.

Yep. I've been working my little fingers this week. This is what is new:

The skateboard that I have been painting:

a stationary design in silkscreen:

Darfur poster
I still have to change some things around for this piece to make the concept and image gel, but you can get the idea.

My illustration for American Way went public yesterday on the first. This is the link to the site. Can anyone find my name credited? hmm, because I didn't.

look here

have a good rest of the week!
